Any idea what would cause this?

Our boiler programmer has been flaky recently with intermittent cut outs and on inspection today I found this under the unit:

I've replaced it with a newer model and run new T&E from the unit back to the boiler PCB and it's currently working fine.
There's been no problem with it for the 2yrs or so we've been living here and it was hard to tell due to the molten plastic and fused wiring what happened.
What's likely to cause that apart from loose wires?

If it is just powering the boiler, pump and valves then it wont be a loose connection. If someone has used it for something else (immersion, heaven forbid?), it could be.

We had an 11kv sub g belly up in a local village a while ago, and it ended up sending HV volts down the LV network for a split second.

there where many, many people complaining of damaged equipment. We had to change several central heating time clocks and stats, and often had to change the back plate too as it showed just the signs you have in the pic.

I am sure if this was the cause you would be more aware of it though, as you would have lost TV's, radio alarm clocks, PIR lights etc too.

Please no - I've just got a new HD Sony Bravia, and I dont want that to happen unless it's last week and I can make a profit from the old TV blowing up.

WPD (our DNO) covered all costs for people with damaged kit, including electrician charges etc. I guess they have insurance for these occasions. Luckily is does not happen often.

Distribution network operators (DNOs) are companies licensed to distribute electricity in Great Britain by the Office of Gas and Electricity Markets.

In other words, the DNO is the people who maintain your local electric network. They send the electricity to your house. My DNO is YEDL - they cover all of Yorkshire. Your YEDL is determined by area, and are not related to the people you pay your bill to (though they do charge your billing company for distribution costs, and they pass these costs onto you)
