Need year of car, fault, issues etc...most probably you need a code reader to diagnose the fault, but many faults are obvious..so please provide more info..

ok guys - had diagnostics done , for my peugeot 307 hdi 1.6 2004 plate...fault codes are:

P0489 - EGR VALVE
UNKNOWN CODE - FUEL PRESSURE LOW

if i leave the car overnight and then start it with my foot on the accelerator it will fire and start up...it will remain started as long as i got my foot on the pedal, once i take my foot off the gas..it will konk out....then it wont start at all unless left for a long time..then the same thing happens....any mobiles mechanics need work please get in touch with me...need to be on the road asap...ta

Your poor starting will certainly be caused by low fuel pressure.....the hdi's were prone to fuel pump failure so open up the fuel filter and see if there are any brass filings in there.
If so, you need a new fuel pump which lives in the tank.
Your EGR valve problem wont help the starting, but its more likely to show up as low performance with some exhaust smoke.
John :)

ta mate....there is no fuel pump in the tank , just a fuel filter that is accessed by removing the back seat....i do not have the specialist tool that is needed to remove this filter...but willtry to find a mechanic to come to me...cheers for the info

The exhaust gas recirculation fault indicates a vacuum leak, so split pipe somewhere.

The low pressure on the fuel I've had before, but on an Escort, Ford couldn't suss it for ages, and got Bosch in from Germany to diagnose the car, was the fuel pump.

I believe on diesels, that you can manually prime the system, so maybe it has an airlock, due to the EGR fault, and needs bleeding? A new fuel filter won't hurt as they are always overlooked at service time.

After the fuel pump was replaced, I still had what you are experiencing now, manual prime, or pump the pedal, but was OK all day after that.

Forgive me mate, I'm not saying that you are right or wrong but I thought all of the hdi's had an electric pump in the tank? They have two plastic pipe ends, one flow, one return, yellowish in colour?
Certainly I have replaced two as they tend to break up and send small shards of brass into the filter on the engine block.
I paid around £150 for each pump if I remember correctly.
John :)

I don't know if you refer to me, Goofy Gorilla (great name!), or your own post? The bosch pump I refer to on the escort was external to the tank afaik, I didn't post specific to the the HDi. But the symptoms are the same. Are there different versions of the vehicle in question? Maybe an earlier version had the pump in tank, and later didn't? Maybe the pump in the escort that I reported on was in the tank? I dunno.

There is never a right or wrong post in a forum, as anything that anyone says can be construed in a different way, by different people, but the more information people have, helps to give a more concise answer. I answer regarding diesel engines in general, but not specific to your car. Apparently Lucas fuel pumps didn't have this issue, but Bosch did, across the model ranges?
