Hello I left the car at a friend's house for a couple of weeks. Thinking I was being clever I disconnected the battery in case the alarm went off. When I tried to open it with the physical key it didn't work. I remember a couple of years ago the door handle wouldn't work which I put down to the cold weather.
It's a b6 Passat. I watched a few videos of people pulling the VW badge off and reaching for the cable but I can't feel the cable so think I'll have to find another way. And ideas?

Can you pull the top of the door a little, enough to get one of those inflating door wedges in, then pump it enough that you can get a coathanger in to pull open the handle?

Wave down a tracksuit wearing hoodie riding a motorbike. They will get in it for you pronto!

I saw a couple of videos about that this evening. Air wedge they're called apparently. You have to prize it open a little to start with apparently. I might see if I can in the morning. Not sure what to use as a jemmy though.

Be very careful doing that if side airbags are fitted.

If the airbag goes off because it thinks it an impact it will fire the wedge out at high speed

Put a brick through the window pull the bonnet lever, re-connect the battery then the remote should work.

If you haven't used the mechanical lock in years, it may be stiff or seized with tarnish.

If you puff a little WD40 through the keyhole using the red straw, then insert and remove the key multiple times, each time giving it a twist to and fro, it may ease off. If visible dirt comes out on the key, wipe it off with a clean rag. I've done that successfully.

Usually you are advised not to oil locks as dirt and grit may stick to the oil, but WD40 dries out fairly soon, and this trick may get you out of trouble.

It is a good idea to test the mechanical lock before you need it. One of my cars also has a keylock on the boot and the passenger door. Try them.

Perhaps locked with the bonnet open, disconnect battery, close bonnet

Is there a mechanical lock on the passenger door too?
