Anyone know what this hole in the front wall is?

My daughter has bought a post war semi and there is a 4 inch dia hole in the wall to the outside with a metal liner inside. It was covered by a plastic vent.
There is fireplace on another wall in the room but no gas, the hole is on the outside wall near the fireplace.
Does anybody know what is it for and what to do about it please?

fresh air supply for the open fire would be my guess -or a now removed gas fire

is it the only fresh air supply to the room? -if so then Id say thats what it it

being a core vent, it must be retrofit -maybe the property was suspended floor and got converted to concrete slab (underfloor was a common way to feed air to a fireplace

Any signs of an appliance having been removed internally?
Possibilities are gas fire/log burner/stove/tumble dryer etc. What is the room it is in? Kitchen/living room etc?
How high above outside ground level? How high above indoor floor level? May help to narrow down possibilities.
Maybe an old gas appliance with a side flue.

Assuming no appliance in the fireplace - & assuming she will have no use for the "hole" then remove the metal sleeve & fill it in.
If she's having a plumber or gas person on site then she could ask them about any possible future use?
