on green timber? I'm looking for a replacement for a Bushmans Saw which was great when it was new but wasn't hard pointed and quickly needed sharpening and setting. The light block saws look very similar.

I have a few trees to fell with 18inch trunks which will need cutting up. (I don't want a chain saw, by the way).

Why ever not; cutting up trees of that size with a manual saw! You must either be some sort of masochist intent on a good work out or have hours or even days of time to spare. I paid 40 quid for my petrol chain saw (new) at an auction 4 years ago & I’ve gone through a few chains since but I wouldn't be without it; you just need to take precautions & be mindful of what your doing!

I’ve currently got a 30ft x 3ft diameter, stripped willow trunk lying where it fell that needs cutting up. A once beautiful tree which was felled because it had unfortunately succumbed to Honey fungus; the lighter deadwood made the mother of all bonfires but the rest of it is destined for seasoning & ultimately our wood stove; hopefully fuel for a good 2 winters but I can’t even imagine attempting it without my chain saw!

It's because I know two people who've had serious accidents with a chain saw. For instance, my brother in law had one that wasn't his fault at all. The chain hit a concealed nail in a large branch which did him no good at all.

Another reason is that I've got a shed full of mechanical contrivances already and I'm a bit tired of looking after them. You're right about the exercise bit, though. I'm getting on in years and don't get enough.

Perhaps I'd better post in the gardening forum about hand saws for large sizes.

Thanks for your reply

I can understand your apprehension; whilst on a day stay only recently a guy in the hospital bed next to me had sliced through his knee cap & muscle. He had 16 years experience but got complacent & used the top of the blade while up-cutting. They can be extremely dangerous but it wouldn’t stop me using one; I just take all practical precautions, wear protective clothing, keep the saw chain sharp & think carefully about what I’m doing.

I also have a bow (bushman’s) saw but it does have a hard point blade! Replacements blades are not expensive & I can even get a complete saw locally for less than a tenner. I’ve no idea if a block saw would be work on timber, I’ve never tried but the teeth look much larger to me.
