It sounds like a good idea to be able to transmit music in an FM frequency so that your car stereo tuner can pick up the signal. You can get a 1Gb mp3 player that transmits FM from a well know auction site - just wondered if they were any good. Anyone got one?

I have a little plug on transmitter for my Ipod mini, which I have never had any trouble with, and the sound quality is fine.

It does drain the Ipod battery a bit quicker but this can be overcome with an in-car charger if you are going on a long journey.

there is new legislation coming into force that allows use of this type of device.

Yes there is. But if the units are for sale anyway, people will use them regardless of whether it's legal or not. Remember when radar detectors first came out?

Yup, I use an iTrip transmitter in my car/van. Also use it in the office to connect my iPod to the cruddy old FM radio we've got.
I'll echo the comments about draining the battery, but you're not going to use it anywhere that hasn't got a power source (car/van/home)

I'm looking at one that you can plug into the cigarette lighter and slip in an SD card. Therefore the power issue won't be a problem, the only thing I'm concerned about is what the quality will sound like - from the few things I've read about them, it seems that the quality is pretty poor.

In general the audio quality is fine you may get the occasional bleed over from a radio station depending on location, when that happens you can switch to a choice of four different channels on most of these devices which should stop the interference.

According to this weeks Computer Active magazine the new legislation comes into force on the 8th December 06.

ive got a griffin itrip, maybe its just my car but the sound is crap, only used it once dont even know where it is now.

It's not one that plugs into the docking port on the ipod but plugs into the earphone socket. Got it off Ebay. Battery life is excellent with the two AAA's lasting several months. there is a length of wire for the antenna which i pass close to the car radio.

not so much fun when it's legal....

I have been using one of these for about a year now, got it off e-bay and connected it to a freeview decoder box in my glove box. As I spend loads of time sitting around in the car between apts, it give me decent sound quality and the ability to watch daytime films etc. I use a portable dvd player as a monitor for now but plan to install a motorised screen in the dash asap.
Never had any problems with "bleeding" from other channels etc and quality is perfectly acceptable.
I would say that the sound quality would depend more on the speaker quality so my standard Ford setup works fine for me
