The apples on my tree are just about beginning to fall.
But on closer examination, a lot of them have "drill holes". Cutting open the apple reveals a maggot. Don't know about the ones further up in the branches.

I know its too late to save them this year. But what is the possible cause and preventative measures for next season?

Its probably a moth or wasp of some sort. How about a pic of the maggot or keep an apple in an enclosed container and see what comes out. Mind you, wasn't that what they did in the film Alien? :p

I don't know if the "drill hole" is where the maggot got in or where it came out....
I just chopped one in half, saw a nasty brown mess and flung it away

I'll chop a few others in half and collect some forensic evidence like in CSI.

look on the bright side, you could have eaten the apple and found half a maggot

Or no maggot at all then you would be forever wondering if there was one inside the apple and its now slowly eating its way through your flesh
