Are 18v batteries for drills generally interchangable?

Evening all,
I've got a JMB drill that's burnt out, but the two Ni-Cd batteries and the charger are sound.
I've been on ebay and seen many bare drills for sale which are just the bare unit, without batteries.
Ideally I'd like to not waste the working bits I have, and not spend a lot of on a new drill, especially as it's only for moderate home use.
There is no branding or model number on the battery itself, it just says PowerPack and 18v on it. No manual. 12.2cm long, 6.9cm wide.
Tried to upload a picture but it's telling me 'upload disabled', maybe because i'm posting from a mobile.
Thanks for reading; any insight would be greatly appreciated.

each manufacturer will have several battery type for there own tools that arnt interchangable

in general cheaper tools are made in factories with different labels on for different own brand names and often share the same batteries and chargers but even these may fit but charge differently

If the battery pack says NiCd on it then it will be ok if it fits, any other chemistry and the voltage will be incorrect, usually dangerously so. But NiCd batteries are toxic and getting harder to buy.
