I was interested in buying a new/pre-reg vectra recently, u can get them pretty cheap at the minute because the new insignia is out.
A friend told me to stay away from them because, the place he works for , the reps had a fleet of vectras and they were fed up with them constantly breaking down.
Is this the case or were they just unlucky?

Personally I would'nt take too much notice of reviews or even other individuals opinion. For practically any car you name you can find consistent problems or issues especially on the Forums. Focus's are supposed to be very reliable but take a scan through Honest Johns Technical Forum it's littered with Focus problems. Do plenty of research by all means but buy a sound car with a good history that drives right and I reckon you'll generally be ok. I'd get over to the Vaushall Vectra Forums and have a scan through them to guide you.

If I was considering buying a secondhand car I would want to be aware of which vehicles are most prone to breaking down and why. Whether such problems are due to poor vehicle assembly or use of defective components and, essentially, has the manufacturer subsequently made effective remedy to any such problems. This sort of info is rarely going to be available from the manufacturers directly, so it falls to certain publications and websites to obtain data from customers (satisfied or otherwise) and present the details as they find them.

The Focus 1998-2004 seems to me to get a rather good review in HJ (4 out of 5 ). Plenty in the What's Good, not too much in the What's Bad and the What to Watch Out For comes with the rider:
Note: this seems like a long list, but the Focus has been the UK's best-selling car so the number of faults below come from the sheer quantity sold.

Agree that checking out the said forums of the car in question can be very useful. ;)
