Right.. so a neighbour asked me to look at his hot water for him, says its not "hot enough". Its a brand new ariston ecombi 24 fitted to old pipework (not that old) it was an old vokera compact that was in before and the new boiler has been hung in the same place. he says the water was a "bit" hotter with the old vokera so I was wondering if there was anyway to adjust the dhw temp other than the big dial on the front, cant see anything in the manual about it.. (didnt look for long :)) its a 3 bedroom house with about 8 or 9 rads
so I cant imagine it being a 24 would be an issue.. It says in the manual that all the sizes of the ecombi (24,30,38) deliver the same max temp and have the same min flow rate.. Hoping to hear a solution that doesnt involve a higher boiler size..

what was the gas inlet working pressure and flow rate of the hot water?, could be an undersized gas supply.

well, as a 'non-rgi' the first thing you can do is check the inlet and output temps using a digital thermometer (£'s from maplins) and using a large measuring jug and stopwatch measure flowrate (litres/minute) and temp rise (usually at a 35 degree temperature rise)

Measure the temp at a cold tap and record, then turn on a hot-tap and after a minute or so for temperature stabilisation pruposes, set the tap at the rate of flow given in the tech spec sheet in the manufacturers instructions that he friendly installer left on site. Measure the temp rise to see if it matches the data sheet.

Next putting the boiler on max, measure how much gas it is using (maybe easiest if it is a metric/cubic metres type). Have it run flat out for two minutes/120secs EXACTLY with no other appliances on. the last three red dials are 10ths/Hundreths/thousandths of a cubic metre. record the start and end readings, the difference then gets multiplied by 30 to give a measurement of cubic metres per hour. Again compare this with what the manufacturers say it should be and then perhaps you can tell us your findings?

From all of this one can gauge if the applaince is doing what its makers intended.

DH

If the meter is a cubic foot type, measure exactly how long the needle takes to make one complete revolution of the dial, someone here will then do the calcs for you (or just goggle 'Gas-Rating')
