Hi,

Renovating a house and by the look of this photo, would anybody be able to use their experience to make a guess whether this is artex or some form of textured paint? A lot of the walls are finished with this. Thank you in advance.

I am a decorator, not a plasterer, but, to me it looks like some kind of "artex".

At some point in the past, it seems like some artex had asbestos in it- most of the time my customers with it, just get a plasterer to skim over it.

I would guess that a 3(?)mm skin would cover that but please wait for one of the plasterers to reply.

Thank you for your reply.

Behind the radiator, the wall is not painted and is a browny orangey colour rather than white bit with the same pattern. I was wondering if this would suggest plaster rather than artex with asbestos in it, but I'm really not sure.

It is a farmhouse so I'm assuming this textured wall was done to cover unevenness.

All help appreciated.

Regular gypsum plaster cannot be "swirled" like that (as far as I know).

It wasn't my intention to make you paranoid about asbestos, I just wanted you to be aware of the risk. Based on your earlier post, it sounds like it may have been a safer version that was toshed on before you purchased the property.

You can purcase kits that will tell you if the finish contains asbestos. In reality, many of us older gits have sanded/drilled through asbestos in the past, and we are still here to reply. In terms of life threatening danger- I believe that white and blue can be the more life changing, brown much less so- again... I am only telling you what I have previously read elsewhere.

My "lay" advice would be to skim over the top. I "believe" that you can use steam strippers to "blow" the artex from the plaster, but on the balance of probability, you will blow the skim coat at the same time.

Again, please wait for someone more knowledgable than me before proceeding.

This site is here to help people. I earn no money from contributing. I am not related to the site or the site mods. I do however hope that a plasterer will weigh in and give you definitive advice.

Broken leather effect in Artex .
Definitely Artex
Bag over a large sponge or bag over large stippling pad will make that pattern. Its a thin mix used there.
Scratch the paint off you will find white artex under it as Artex is not pink like plaster.

Re asbestos. I'd say no asbestos in that as very creamy looking. Asbestos in artex don't look like that although only way to he sure is get it tested.
