Hello,

My husband and I have already taken down a partition wall and unattractive cupboard in our kitchen, we have yet to take the ceiling down. We are then having a new ceiling and walls re plastered.

Whilst doing research online I discovered that some properties have asbestos I the walls and ceiling amongst other areas and now I'm worried. I cannot see anything that makes me think we have asbestos, it's just old plaster falling off the walls but I have been scared and need advice, as our kitchen is due to be fitted in 10 -15 days.

Our house was built in 1952.

Surely the kitchen fitter or plasterer would have mentioned asbestos to us wouldnt they?

Asbestos is not randomly used on walls and ceilings. If its plaster/plasterboard then its not asbestos.

Artex or similar textured coatings may contain a small amount of asbestos material, otherwise you will see asbestos panels or material if they are there.

BTW, any kitchen firm carring out installations should be trained to identify possible asbestos. Strictly, the firm should be asking you to carry out an asbestos survey before they start work, but hardly anyone does that for domestic work, despite it being a requirement.

Asbestos in domestic plaster would be very unusual no reason to include it as plaster is pretty fireproof anyway. Most asbestos in domestic houses will be in sheet form screwed, nailed or held in place by battens. Artex is common so textured celings or walls need checking the more dramatic the texture the more likely they are to contain asbestos.
