Hello,
I'm about to fit a wall hung toilet. However, the connection to the soil pipe needs some alterations. The soil pipe is asbestos, and the connector to the existing toilet is lead. Has anyone ever done somethng like this, removing the lead connection and getting some new plastic pipe which fits into the asbestos stack?

Thanks for any advice.

Are you sure the down pipe is asbestos?

I have never come across an asbestos soil pipe - rainwater pipes, yes but not soil pipes.

As long as you don't disturb the asbestos it's fine to leave in situ. If you got to remove better get it risk assessed and leave it to a specialist firm to remove and dispose off.Can be a tad expensive.

removal by asbtestos firm will cost atleast 2.5 k however theris always some half witted plumb out their who will charge 250 quid for it.

seen a plumber up my way who thought it was cast iron and just cut away at the thing without any p&e and several mths later saw him again doing same thing to another property with asbestos poo pipe.
job doesnt need specailist anyone can do it provided they know what they are doing and how to work safley with asbestos.

You r right doyle but i beleve its got to be disposed off in a safe manner ,canny just put it the nearest bucket or skip. Not that we didnt do that 20 or so years ago, some middle aged plumbers and heating engineers must be ticking time bombs.

when i was a lad, i was told that the asbestos used to make soil pipe was not dangerous, but the blue stuff can kill you. so we just caried on regardless. I think that i may just beone of those ticking time bombs.
hmm, better join Bupa QUICK

Thanks for the replies.

Has anyone slotted plastic pipe into an existing asbestos pipe. There is a tee where the lead comes out, and then inside the house to the toilet. If I remove this lead, i'm thinking I can slot some plastic soil pipe into the tee.

Thanks for any ideas.

I have removed a couple of asbestos soil pipes (well a specialist firm did) and replaced them with plastic soil pipes. The easiest way to check if it's asbestos or a cast iron stack is to place a magnet on it, obviously asbestos ain't magnetic.

You can get a cast iron to plastic pipe soil adaptor (from Graham's or City plumbing), it will have a rubber fin on one end like on WC pan connector and the other end will accept 110mm pipe. To connect it to an asbestos soil pipe remove this fin and insert it into the pipe, gently tap it down until it's nearly flush. If you are connecting into a cast iron stack then leave this fin on.
