I have read that white asbestos that was used in roofing products is not dangerous, is this true?

Yes and no. It's asbestos so it's very bad if you inhale it, but was usually only used to bind cementious (?) products, so should be safe unless exposed through damage. Still a lot less dangerous than blue asbestos though, which is the really evil killer stuff. Blue I believe was used as insulation.

Many threads on this already, have a search for the 'A' word.

The reason i ask is , my own house included has had an asbestos roof since it was built 70 yrs ago.
I f white asbestos is so dangerous why are not 1,000s of people why live in houses with asbestos roofs suffering from asbestos related diseases.

Because it's made from concrete, with asbestos fibres added for reinforcement. Only when the concrete panels or tiles are broken does the asbestos become free and pose a risk. Very old asbestos sheets can become brittle and crack/erode. These should probably be replaced.
