Hi all,

Sure the answer to this is obvious. I've spray painted some wire baskets and I'd like to attach them to the fence - ideally onto hooks but if not, more permanently. What's the best type of fixing/bracket that's not going to pull out of the wooden fence pales?

The basket is the Jonaxel from ikea, pic attached.

Have a Google for 'P' clips.....nice and permanent but of course hooks will be fine so long as there aren't any light fingered people around!
John :)

what part of the fence are you planning on fixing to - just the paneling ? What type of fence panel / posts do you have
Whats going into the baskets , earth & flowers?
Some of the panels I have are from wickes and are quite flimsy really for any weight, , like a basket full of earth, flowers and water, although to be fair i have never tried. A lot of the rest of the garden fencing is close boarded and that has horizontal Arris rails and much thicker wood paneling

They're 3/4 x 4inch, and each basket will probably hold three 15cm diameter plastic pots of compost and bedding plants.

Thanks for asking the right questions!

However, if you want to ever remove the baskets so that you can work on them - plain hooks may be better.
Or eyes on the fence and use a pair of cheap padlocks (well oiled) to connect the basket to the eyes.
That way you have some security and the ability to remove them.

All I can find are cup hooks... is there something more suitable? Wondering if they'll stay screwed into the wood. Not worried about security, there's no access into the back garden.

Not that it matters for £2.50 really, but how rust resistant are they?

If it was me I'd probably use a bit of multi purpose banding, or even just a couple of nails at 45 deg.
Might need to fit a horizontal board first if the fence isn't very strong.

If security is not an issue then just go for large cup hooks.

But not the sort that only have 1/2" thread entering into the wood, needs more to take the weight of the earth.
So maybe a couple of big 2" nails may be better?

Didn't even think of just nails! Fab, thanks. I'm spray painting them, so hopefully will keep the rust at bay for a while.

"Vine eyes" and hooks are a larger, galvanised version intended for such use. Found on gardening shelves or on ebay. You'll do best to drill a pilot hole first into the batten or, preferably, fence post or rail.

The "L" shaped ones will be easier to lift the baskets off.
