Hi i'm thinking of fitting some lighting into my attic i was thinking either battens or florescent tubes what would be best and is it ok to tap into the supply from the lighting circuit for the upstairs there are downlighters in all the upstairs rooms and juction boxes for each room in the attic already. thanks

Should be fine.

You might want to 'pretend' that all the lights on the 1st floor are on and add up the total wattage then divide by 230v.

Compare the figure you calculate with the MCB amp rating for the circuit.

To my mind, batten could also be referring to a fluorescent fitting, although I do appreciate that you're probably referring to a BC batten holder. The BC holders will be more compact and easier to install, but a 5ft fluorescent fitting or similar will probably provide better light output from a single fitting.
