Please help.

Im looking to convert my loft into a Play room.

I have 3 children and running out of space and thought it would make perfect sense to create a play/homework etc room up in the loft.

For financial reasons I cannot go down the whole 'loft conversion' route, so thought a playroom with ladders (not stairs) could be a cheaper alternative until I can find a spare 20-30K.

Bascially, i don't know where to start!! Do i need any kind of planning permission? If not, do I need to inform my council at all?

Many thanks.

You wont need planning permission but you will need building regulation approval

By all means shove the little ones up there, but just make sure they know what to do if trapped by a fire which may break out in the loft or downstairs.

Even if you don't want to get this conversion officially done, then you should get it properly done. A set of ladders is not properly done, and the kids may be worth more than £49.95

Fire and Structure are the biggies. Frankly a conversion albeit non-compliant (illegal) without a proper staircase is downright irresponsible. Not to mention your house insurance may be invalidated.

What is your budget? What is the existing roof structure made up from? Any photos?

If I found out you were letting your kids run riot in an unprotected loft space I'd ring the council for you!
