Hello all, I was wondering if anybody can help me with the following. I am thinking of converting my attic. There is no felt under the tiles in my roof and I was wondering if someone could suggest what I should put under the tiles before I start with the rest of the work. I dont want to take the tiles off as it would be too much work and too expensive.

Foam or polystyrene insulation leaving a gap of 50mm between the back of the tiles and the upper side of the insulation. Then a vapour barrier. Then plasterboard.

You have thought about getting power up there? And if the joists can take it?

Thanks for that. I am getting electicity up there. I was thinking of putting that " Therma wrap (silver bubble foil) on the inside of the Rafters, do you think that will be sufficient?

I screwed battens to the side of the rafters to support some polystyrene for insulation. Then I stapled Therma wrap for a vapour barrier, a little more insulation (the bubbles) then to reflect the heat back in. Then I used plasterboard.

For another option, you can get plasterboard with the vapour barrier bonded to the back of it.

But you do need some insulation as well as the Therma wrap, I would say.

I would contact your local Building Regs Officer for free advice. On my conversion we had to use a minimum of 120mm of Celotex for insulation, but there are many other factors to take account of as well. If it is to be a habitable room, then it must meet current Building Regulations.
