Picked up an aparantly working PC at an auction but most things including word are blocked by "This computer is registered to Joe Blogs" How can I get use of it or is it a lost cause?

The screen totally freezes and the mouse ceases to operate. I have to turn the whole thing off and start again.

I would Igorian if I knew what formatting means. I am a total ignoramus as far as computers are concerned and the reason I bought the old one was to educate myself on the ins and outs of computing. Know of any simple step by step books?

On a totally different note, I got the spelling of ignoramus (ignaramous) and computers (coputers) wrong but the spell check only highlighted your user name. Bang gose my confadince in spell cheks!

Just tried spell check again and still only Igorian shows up. Does my new computer have a problem here?

I am suggesting that you return the PC to it's factory state. Did you get any disks supplied with the machine?

You haven't told us anything about the machine, so I wont be able to give any specific advice.

I would have a look at the Dummy range of books. These are good for beginners and have useful reference stuff.

Cheers Igorian, I did exactly as you suggested and got a copy of "Brilliant Computer Basics" from my local library. Didn't get any discs but will try to reurn it to its factory state, if I find the info in my new book.

These were the Dummy books I was referring to in my previous post. You should find all you need to get you going. :D

Ta Igorian, the local library has a whole load of these so I'll take your advice!

another way (if you feel you are able) is to take the hard drive out, put it into another pc( you may have to alter the jumper) and get new pc to format "new" hard drive

alternativly buy and install a new hard drive, since it is these that "waer out"

Why don't you tell him to build himself a new one while you're at it

What can you do with the PC without it freezing up? You can use the web browser and access the internet (like this forum) presumably?

The recommended books will help you learn about a PC, but I doubt if they will help you fix the freezing problem. A lot of people format/reinstall their machine when it begins to crash/freeze and they can't explain why.

Format - deleting everything from the harddrive. Imagine rubbing out all the names and telephone numbers from your address book - nice empty book, but pretty useless with no names and numbers in.

Install/Reinstall - installing some software to the harddrive. In this case referring to installing the first piece of software, known as the operating system. Think of the PC hardware as a plot of land. Think of your furntiure as the software (word, excel, internet explorer). You can't install your furniture until you have the house - the house can be likened to the operating system. The most popular operating system is known as Microsoft Windows.

If your auction bargain PC came with no original disks or reinstall disks you will need to buy a copy of Microsoft Windows (assuming you want to reinstall) and it isn't exactly cheap.

There are some operating systems which are completely free, but they are not so mainstream and won't necessarily offer you the PC knowledge you are seeking.

In short, a broken install of windows can be a biatch to fix. A complete reinstall of windows is not necessarily a small or simple task.

Ta All, I now find that I can access most of the computer apart from those files aparantly protected by Joe Blogs's password. As soon as the icon touches one of these the whole lot freezes.

Cheers Tim West, I did the next best thing last night , took the whole thing to bits and reassembled it Does it work? Does it hell!
ps Legoland password now replaced by my original one Bolo.
