Hi everyone,

I'm just looking for a rough cost to have a gas box moved - moved where I don't know. Basically it's right outside our living room window currently, and we are playing with the idea of having the window taken out and having a bay window installed which will mean moving the gas box which is currently by the wall below the window.

While you're here if you also know of average costs of bay windows and if they are possible on ground floor when there isn't one currently there that would be great!!

Thanks,
Jessica

Bay window - upwards of £5k.

Meter move upwards of £800.

We did exactly what you are doing on a job about 9 years ago. You'll fork out a lot of money for a small gain. As far as Building control are concerned, it's a mini extension along with (potentially) 350mm thick walls!

Thank you! Thats really helpful, we want to move our lounge around a bit… so having the extra space (large bay window) to fit maybe a cuddle armchair or a small two seater would be perfect… depends how big / small they can go with the bay window!!

That's expensive! Have you considered an oriel window - it would fit above your meter and you could have a bench in it.

Gas distribution companies will rinse you for this work. I was quoted over a grand and this was 6 or 7 years ago. When I phoned them to ask I was also treated to a weird, completely unprovoked and Mafia-esque diatribe about what would happen if I got someone to do it independently. They were on about how they would find out about the work through their 'intelligence network' (I had an indoor meter I wanted moving outside, and never once had someone ask to be let in to read it during the 8 years I lived in that house). How they would shut off my gas and charge me 1000s to move it back to the original position. It might have just been a random occurrence that the person I spoke to was going through some type of episode but I have not forgotten the conversation to this day.

There are approved private contractors, that work for the big boys, that will do the meter move for less. The technique is the same - pipe connection ends scraped clean, electrode based fittings that are fused to the pipe etc.

Over a grand but less than 2k? That’s probably not a bad price tbf, it’s never going to be cheap

Decide where you want it and use cadents diversion service to get a price.

They moved our meter about 6m from inside our old garage to outside our newly built porch, they had to fit us a brand new line too as we were twinned with our neighbours.

That lot cost us £491, I dug the new trench on our property for the new gas line as they wanted £700 to do it, so it would have been £1191 for them to do it all, that was may 2021.

Who is authorised to move your gas box depends on who owns the gas network for your area. Some companies will authorise independents to work on their network but again it depends where you are.
