Avoiding blocked soakaway

morning chaps.

I’m in the process of planning my soakaway, which will take the rainwater away from the rear extension guttering and channel drains in 2 locations.

I plan on them going down just one pipe into the soakaway itself.

What do I need to put in place to stop the like of leaves and cr@p filling it up and eventually blocking it up?

One fitted to each point? I can’t find any info on this subject at all.

How are they accessed when layers under paving etc? Especially if a slot channel drain is used?

You fit a trap at the connection of the pipe to the gully/channel. This collects the deritus and you clean it out every now any again. It's the same principle as every other drain or waste pipe around the house

You could just fit a mesh grill and sponge in the drain channel outlet, but these may need cleaning out more regularly.

I find that a trap at gulley point works.
Also, try to keep the pipework as straight as possible so to be able to rod it if needed.
After the down pipe , go with 4 inch brown pipe.
A bit overkill but worth it, trust me.

You would need an access chamber at the soakaway end if you were planning to rod the pipe, otherwise the end of the pipe will just get blocked up as you have nowhere to push any blockage. Or if planning to use the pull scraper (not that reliable for drains), a chamber at the start of the run.

Do they have some kind of grill or filter to stop any crap making its way through?

My concern with the channel drain is how it would be periodically cleaned out.

If going to a soakaway, (so no risk of drain odours coming back), you can fit a Rainwater Gulley, which will catch any leaves and detritus before it enters the drainage system, but it will need cleaning out as required. As for the channel drain, fit a sump at each outlet to collect the crud.

Alternatively, (if room), build a catch pit before the soakaway.
