Have you checked the pcb?

As sleepyhead already posted older whirlpool machines had a separate pcb which is mounted half way down the right hand inside front machine. if this is the case you will find dry joint on a small transformer on this pcb. this stops the motor rotation on these models. resolder dry jointand bobs your uncle. The pcb slides out of its cradle.
Thanks for the info, as you say the PCB is located below the door safety switch. Are there any specific ways of removing the PCB as it appears to be located on the plastic holder with no apparent means of releasing it. No plastic clip visible

Release the door seal from the front panel, remove the screws from the door interlock, remove two bolts from behind the plinth cover, pull front of machine down and it will lift off.
Many thanks for the info and help. PCB removed and as you said dry joint on transfomer (design fault?). Fault fixed machine now operational
