We want to open up a chimney breast and have an open fire . At the moment there’s an electric fire but behind it is what we think is a green metal Back boiler ??

The chimney has a metal liner .. I’m not sure what that would of been used for.

It’s a 1950s ex council house
We have a boiler in the kitchen and central heating .

Can anyone tell me if it definitely is a back boiler and how much work remove it? Would really appreciate any experts for advice!

Yes old Gas back boiler.
Make sure its not connected to existing system and remove it.

!
If there is a gas connection to or near the boiler you need a Gas Safe bod to remove and cap. The liner is probably only suitable for gas - so you'll need a HETAS bod to remove that and asess the brick chimney for solid fuel. Given the age of the house you'll probably need a new solid fuel liner.
