Recently tore up our old back yard which had been badly damaged and reused the york stone for missing garden wall etc. Laid down tarpauline to stop the nearby ash tree seedlings from rooting. Now thinking about relaying the yard. Due to a number of factors the ground is severly unlevel and will require a lot of work to get fit for the new slabs (imitation york stone  ). Also at the same time we've some land at the far end of the property (far side of the wall.. ie not part of the yard) that we want to cultivate into a flower bed (primarily to stop neighbours putting cars/kids playthings/bouncy castle etc on it...cheeky bleeders have already used up their area with such things and are now moving onto ours). We pegged it out last weekend and started breaking up the land. Unfortunately this area is very rooty (the ash tree?) and full of bricks from previous tenants renovations/destruction and is taking a lot of hard work to break up. So questions:

HSS has been my best friend through renovation work with the house..is there any suitable tools ( :p ) to help with either levelling/breaking up the soil?

have you considered using a small digger? 29" gap to get a littel'un through - will save a heap of agony.

rotovator, most places will hire a camon one which should do the job.
