Bad smell coming from upstairs and downstairs waste pipes

Hello

So for an over a year now there has been a bad smell coming from my wastewater pipes.
I am talking about the wastewater pipes that take the waste water from the sink and the shower tub. It goes outside down a downpipe into a plastic hopper.

My house was made in the 1950's so previously it had a copper downpipe that just went straight down into the drain. Since it was removed with the hopper the bad smells occur.

The bad smells are intermittent I was thinking about getting some kind of cover for the hopper but it does not seem to be possible.

I actually called out South East water to check the drains they stuck a camera down and didn't see any kind of blockage. ( I live in a terraced house with shared drains).

Any ideas?

Where does the pipe that comes out of the bottom of the hopper go? Into a drain gulley, or does it disappear underground?

Hoppers are horrible, unsanitary things in this application, hence why they were banned years ago. Might be worth looking at communing both wastes into a 50mm pipe and running that down to the gulley, instead of the hopper.

Can you put a pic up of what's there now, and we'll be better placed to advise you what to replace it with.

They didn't smell outside of our 50's council house.......maybe because we didn't use the bathroom much - washed in the kitchen in the winter, with the gas cooker on to heat the room.

Ours overflowed, and with the Old Man too tight to spend anything repairing the house unless he had to, it made a hell of a mess. Still remember the hair and soap collecting in the gulley grating, then when you let a bath go, it couldn't drain away quick enough and washed the path as well. Pretty sure that hopper is still there, (may have been cleaned out by now though!)

Ours went into a back inlet gulley. The sink went into a gulley through the grid, not above. Even as a lad I was interested in plumbing - sad I know.

If it gives you a lifelong interest and a passion and pride for what you do, then I dont ever think it's sad. What I do find sad, is the experience and skills, that simply cannot be bought, slowly disappearing, with the retirement of the older hands and the lack of youngsters coming up through the ranks to replace them.

Apparently I was fascinated with watching the Plumber who came round to fit a radiator in what was going to be my bedroom. Dont recall that bit, do though remember the ice on the inside of the windows in the winter, and that was with a radiator! (Not sure if it was actually turned on though, the Old Man was probably still begrudging paying for it to be fitted!)
