Hi I've just had a new boiler fitted and a vented system was converted to a sealed one.

I was told the rads don't need to be balanced and all lockshields can be opened fully as each rad has a thermosatic valve.
Is this correct?

Cheers

No

TRVs sometimes means its not so noticable if the system isn't balanced properly.

They dont mean it doesn't have to be done

Also not ALL rads should have trvs. There should be one left without in the same room as the room stat.

Your installer either did not care, or did not know what he was doing. Is the benchmark sheet filled in properly and signed off correctly? Timer and thermostat working as they should?
What boiler do you have?

Hi

Thanks for the replies.

The rad in the room with the room stat has no TRV.

The boiler is a British Gas 330+.

I've got a sheet saying it was installed correctly, no mentione of balancing rads mentioned. Timer and stat work fine.

Cheers

the preferred method is now to use an automatic bypass valve rather than one rad with 2 lockshields

Eh? Its to operate room stat not act as a by-pass. Although worcester still do

Not a company that has a reputation for doing the best job possible. Could well be that it was done on the cheap by one of their millions of subbies that get abused and underpaid.

Ive seen BG quotes that go into detail of work to be carried out eg remove existing boiler, cylinder, fit TVRs, flush system, add chemicals etc. each with a value to make up the final bill. Just wondered if it included balancing

LSVs and TRVs have two completely different functions.

LSVs control the heat input to each individual radiator.
TRVs control the final temperature of the room the radiator is in.

Leave all the LSVs wide open, and the chances are the system will only heat one room at a time, with the most of the flow going to the radiator nearest the boiler until it's TRV shuts down, shuffling the flow to the next in line etc. etc.

If the rad. nearest the thermostat is first in line, it will shut down the system before any other rooms warm up.
