Balcony/Flat Room Replacement & Tiling How to?

Hi All,

I have a balcony that is also a flat roof over my lower floor. It is currently waterproof, but I want to replace it for aesthetic and longevity reasons. I am going to get a roofer to replace the waterproof membrane and a tiler in, but I want to understand the mechanics and best ways of achieving what I want, in order to ask for the right things and get what I want.

Could anyone give me some advice on how you would do this; what type of roofing membrane you would recommend; and how you build the ground up in order to get the flat finish that I want.

PS - the photos of the style I want, is from a neighbour but they have no idea how the builders did what they did. The builder is now retired.

That makes sense. In the photos I provided, they have a small gutter and then tiles going right to the edge (like an infinity pool) of the balcony. I cant see how you do that with the rubber supports?

The other question I have, is that my house is 3 stories high. If I every need to do some work on my roof, Then it is likely scaffolding would need to sit on-top of the tiles. Not sure these rubber supports would really be strong enough to support that?

Are there other more traditional options which are maybe harder if there is a leak, but more resilient and load bearing?

Try the claim guys, if it was not your fault.

Anyway, these are just normal felt flat roofs, with "promenade tile" supports for the slabs. Normal flat roof, upstands, outlets falls, the lot.

If errecting scaffold off these, then you would just lay a batten across, and it's ok.

Ok sounds like a plan. The tiles my neighbour has laid are regular porcelain tiles, like bathroom tiles which from my experience are not that strong. Do you normally lay something stronger but cheap underneath if you want this effect to give more strength?

There are simple ways to scaffold over the balconies with out contacting the tiles.
