banging boiler

Please help! For 3 months we have had intermittent banging from the boiler. The heating and hot water have been fine up until today. When the timer comes on there is a very loud mechanical grinding noise coming from the boiler. The radiators and water are only tepid, and after about thirty seconds, the pilot light cuts out. Is my pump knackered, or is there another explanation? I have been ripped off by plumbers before, and would appreciate any advice!
