Banging hot water pipes.

I have a hot water heater, and when it turns on there is rushing water through the pipes, and banging pipes. I was told this is air in the lines or poor installation and banging against the support. HELP! this is wakeing my kids at night I NEED SLEEP!! What can I do?

Please could you specify the make and model of the heater, and (if known) whether the feed to it is from the mains or from a tank?
