Banking giant to leave Canary Wharf.

Going back to the City of London. You know, that place that some on here said all the financial giants were leaving. Start of a trend?

The usual remoaner fruit cakes will be along in a bit to put some type of doom narrative on it

Just for the sake of completeness, I think it's worth commenting on the reason for the move. It's because they are downsizing their HQ by 75%. The reason they have given, is because of changed work practices after COVID.

They could downsize in Canary Wharf.

They could downsize in Canary Wharf.

I suppose so. I can't see the owners getting another tenant to take the whole building. It's absolutely ginormous. So you would think they'd be happy to divide it up. Maybe HSBC are thinking that, because they no longer need something that size, they might as well move back into the heart of the City.

There was some deal done with that building when HSBC were getting it built. The builders defaulted in some way, overrun perhaps, so HSBC ended up getting it at a vastly reduced price. While they were still in it they sold it. Mysterious ways.

It seems to be a bit like the de/centralizing phases we used to know. I know someone working for Nintendo, in an ivory tower in London. Always seemed silly - I mean I don't understand why they needed to be there - but they did apparently. They'yre moving out now.
Give it 20 years and they'll all be clamouring to get back in?

Our daughters firm relocated to Canary Wharf a while back and they downsized (building wise) at the same time as they had adopted flexible working and staff only have to go in to the office a couple of days per week at most. I bank with Nat West and if I ever have the need to phone them, I always get routed to someone working from home. I tell you what, it will have a knock-on effect on house prices in London - no longer will you have to pay a fortune to live near to the city to save thousands on travelling costs. That’ll filter down eventually.

Many in the city at all levels work most days from home, it makes to downsize and move somewhere with cheaper rentals, my guess is they have reached a break clause in the lease or can assign it.

Blup

Interestingly in the public inquiry, Hancock has just accepted covid preparations were put on hold because resources were diverted to plan for brexhit implementation. So at least indirectly brexhit did impact covid and by extension impacted the economy.
