Hi all. I have a basement that has been wired as part of the ring from the room above. It has a combi-boiler (fed from a FCU) and 2 double 13A sockets unused except when the mower comes out (Via a plug in RCD at the moment).
I need to redecorate the basement and was going to replace the surface mount boxes and cabling. Should the basement ring on its’ own RCD? If so should this be at the start/end of the ring down there or would it be better to swap the MCB in the CU? Cheers for any advise.

No reason that it cant share the other ring - assuming there's no heavy loads down there.
Ya know, heat lamps to ripen the "tomato plants", that sort of thing?

Can the MCB be swapped for an RCBO? That will give you RCD protection even when the adaptor gets lost. they are available for all major brands of modern C.U.

If not, get an RCD double socket and place it beside the external doorway.

It's a bit more convenient to have one ring per floor, not so much for load reasons, as that you can isolate fewer outlets when there is a trip or maintenance is required.

If the basement is ever used as a workroom, it's handy to have plenty of sockets just above worktop height. this also keeps them above the level of some floods.
