after removing some plasterboard, I have traced what I assume is the bathroom equipotential bonding (via 4mm earth wire) from the copper water pipes to the earth terminal in the pull switch. The pull switch controls the light and the extractor fan in the bathroom. Im assuming that the earths of all light+fan+switch link up so it is probably ok but is it correct/ legal??

Yes if that is only electrical item in bathroom. 4mm is min allowed to prevent mechanical damage not for current carrying ability and idea is to make everything in the bathroom same voltage does not really matter if everything is at 40 volt to incoming earth as long as everything is the same in the bathroom.
If there was an electric shower than that would also be connected the only thing that is not connected that is electrical is a shaver point.
Although if the house complies with 17th Edition it is no longer required.
