evening all , so we have a timed extractor fan which is operated when the light switch is turned on...the homeowner has a lodger who is up at 4am each morning so the homeowner doesnt want the fan operating unless its to clear steam.. she has a TP isolator already , what do you guys swear by as a pullswitch for fans ??

Does the bathroom have a window?

A pull switch fixed on the ceiling may be the answer.

The timed fan could be re-used, with a separate pull switch controlling it, and the fan could run on when the separate pull cord is turned off.

Otherwise a manual fan can be used (or the timed fan linked out) and controlled again by a separate pull cord for simple on/off operation.

There are wall mounted fans with a pull cord already on them.

Alternatively, get a humidistat fan which will only operate when there's humidity.

EDIT; Or fit a 3 pole fan pull switch in the bathroom before the fan, which will allow similar operation to what you have if it's left on.

Should have fitted a humidistat fan.

They should be standard fit really, in bathrooms whole point of the fan is to ventilate the room when there a humid atmosphere, ie bath or shower. In order to stop condensation and the formation of mould from that condensation.

A fan activated in the middle of the night by somebody using the toilet is not only a waste of electric but defeating the point it's there in the first place.

As is if a person has a bath in a morning without switching the light on.

A humidistat fan is only one which comes on when you "actually need it" and goes off when it is not needed.

or to look at it another way

is the householder troubled by the noise of the fan?

perhaps it has worn-out bearings.

a new centrifugal fan with ball bearings will not cost much and will be quiet.
