20 years ago, for reasons I'll not explain, it was necessary to strip our bathroom walls back to the brick/breezeblock they are built from. Wood pannelling has covered them since then, but it is now looking "worn," around the bath in particular where it has been attacked by damp and mildew over the years.

We can now afford to replace the wood so I'm thinking of using "Gyproc Moisture Resistant" plasterboard directly onto the bricks/breezeblocks then using grouted ceramic tiling on top of the plasterboard. Does anyone have any advice to offer regarding fixing the Gyproc to the walls, and surface prepararation of the Gyproc before tiling on top of it?

Hi Operarius,

To stich the plasterboard to the alls you've two options. You can attach a wooden frame to the brick / blockwork and then screw the boards to that. Alternatively, and my personal preference, you can use drywall adhesive and dot n dab the boards to the wall. Just make sure you use plenty of dabs and also ensure every edge (top, botton and sides) has a more or less continuous layer of adhesive behind it).

To prep the boards for tiling you don't really need to do anything. However, I would strongly recommend skimming the boards prior to tiling. This means that if you ever need to remove the tiles for one reason or another then you won't end up removing the paper coating of the board with the tiles which wil inevitably mean you have to replace the board before re-tiling.

Fred

Thanks for the advice Fred, I think I'll use the dabs of adhesive method as space is tight around the bath. Cheers! :D
