Bathtub pop-up waste not working

After 15 years since installing the bath, turning the handle doesn't open/close the pop-up waste anymore.

Now I don't keep the pop-up plug in as I need a snap-off knife to take off. No idea if I wrongly adjusted the length of the plug screw or if it's the handle that is not working anymore.

It would be too complicated to have the whole overflow system replaced, and anyway I checked under the bath and it doesn't seem to be any leaking.

Any suggestions for a solution without expensive specialist plumbing help? A traditional rubber plug would do? Would a rubber plug without the traditional overflow match the current system? I wouldn't be able to remove the current handle, not to risk damaging the bath, I would leave it in and wouldn't touch it.

If the plug is removed ,look down the plug hole ,whilst operating the handle. You should be able to see the lever that raises/ lowers the plug moving up and down. If it's not moving you need to replace the the whole thing. If it is moving,the plug needs adjusting by the screw on its base.

Thanks, I tried what you suggested. While operating the handle, the lever doesn't seem to move.
Anything can be done rather than replacing the whole thing? A rubber plug (without its traditional overflow) would do? I am not sure I am using the correct terms here.

You could leave as is and just buy a traditional plug ,that you fit and remove by hand.

Thanks, I'll get a traditional plug and somehow put the chain around the knob. Would a rubber one be good enough? Or could I get a metal one as long as the size is the same as the old one? Not very stylish but that's all I can do. Will be looking for a plug saying 'don't waste water'.

I had a similar fault and found that the hole for the pop up plug is not the same size as for an ordinary bathplug.

I am using a rubber mushroom.

I think I will never buy another pop-up.

It has a metal loop in the top.

When I had trouble with ours, my 'temporary' fix to remove the pop up plug was to use a valve grinding stick. I got 6 months out of it before I got round to replacing it.

As I very often put off solving problems, I will try and use the non-perfect solution of a rubber plug, hoping it can be a final one (at least in the life of my bath). Thanks anyway.
