Scots roofs seem to be different to English roofs, as they seem to have a ply or other board under the felt.
If yours is like this, and you nail horizontal tile battens to it, each batten will act as a dam and hold water on its upper surface, after which it will quickly rot away.
Counterbattens run down the slope of the roof, and put a space under the tiling battens, which water and dirt can roll down.
