Hello all,

I have the misfortune to have the Baxi 247207 electronic timer on my new boiler.

I can't work out how to turn the heating off permanently. Or at least until it starts getting cold again, which won't be long as I live in Scotland.

Do I really have to delete all the programmes ? I know how to temporarily switch it off if it is in the middle of a programme, but not how to stop all the programmes from starting. The electro-mechanical timer has a cunning slider switch marked "Off" which amazingly does exactly what I want.

Second question - as I hate the thing, are there any better alternatives ? (Apart from the mechanical timer which I've worked out for myself - clever huh)

Requirements:
1) To be able to programme up to 3 sets of on/off. Happy to have them apply to every day.
2) Would like a "boost" functionality - i.e. the ability to press a button and it comes on for x hours.
3) Need an "Off" button so that none of the central heating programmes are activated, but the hot water still works !!

The reason I hate it is because it is downright unintuitive to use (who would have thought that to delete a program you need to put the clock into 24 hour mode first and delete means setting it to past 11pm ??). It requires the eyesight of fighter pilot to see the icons and has no backlighting. The buttons are also ridiculously small, and it looks and feels cheap.

Press the top button 3 times and the programmer will switch off.

There are so many to choose from!
It really depends on your personal choice and your budget.
Wireless, Programmable roomstats are good because you can keep it almost anywhere you want and can control everything from it, instead of having to go to the programmer when you want to change call periods.
There are also smart stats that monitor your usage and demands and learn your habits - so that they can fully automate every nuance.
We install Honeywell products for most jobs, Grasslin for budget jobs, unless customers specifically request other models.

Pretty much any single channel programmer on the market will work. Do you want something basic, something Internet enabled or what?

In the end I phoned up Baxi. It seems there is no facility in the timer to do it, and I was advised to turn down the thermostat so the boiler never fired. This however means that the central heating pump pointlessly recirculates the water .....

I'll have a look at Honeywell Products. Many thanks for your help, all.

update: I phoned up Grasslin and all became clear ; this model really requires a room thermostat which I don't have. The Tactic 371 model has a permanent override instead of the termporary override.

In the end, I made my own timer, with a Raspberry Pi 3 and a photo-optically isolated relay board, and a schmitt gate to pull the pins low (off) if the Pi lost power. I installed a lightweight web server called Jetty, and wrote some java servlets to enable me to define "profiles" (groups of programmes e.g. Autumn, Warm Winter, Cold Winter etc), programmes (which can repeat on multiple days or just be for a one off date), the ability to switch on for the next x minutes (5,10,15,30,60,120 etc) or ensure that it stays off for the same.

It works really well, and being web-based means that I can access it from my phone or any other computer in my house (if outside the house, I use a VPN to access it securely). I had plans to get it to operate a wifi or mesh connected radiator value, but I haven't found any that are not using a proprietary protocol, and to be honest the only time I need that is infrequently when I want to switch a zone on or off entirely.
