I have an ELSON hot water storage tank see here in the loft (cold water feed attached to tank) that is fed down to a baxi boiler located behind the gas fire in the living room.
When I activate the water to heat up (not the overall heating for the house, banging is less noticable when overall heating is switched on) the gas supply ignites and heats the boiler for approx 1 minute, then gravity takes over and starts to send the heated water up to the hot water storage tank, although not without the boiler banging and knocking very loudly. This only happens when you initially turn on the water heating.
I've used a FERNOX cleaner a couple of times over the last 6 months to try and disperse any limescale etc, and bled all radiators.
