Hi, I wonder if anyone can help me please?

I have the above boiler which yesterday started cutting out for hours at a time. No sign of a flame, no lights on. No heating.

A quick look at the online help guide seeed to indicate a potentiometer problem.

Rang several engineers, none of which could come, all tried to help over the phone with different opinions.

First one said fan problem and told me to hit the top right hand side of the boiler hard with my hand. Instant success as it came on. Unfortunately it went off again 5 mins later.

It continued to come on every now and again. But the hot water doesn't seem to ever seem run out.

Next guy said it sounded like a problem away from the boiler, not the fan, especially of the water was not running out as he said the bolier must be managing to heat the water somehow.

Told me to climb in the loft and check that the ball valve in the cold water tank wasn't stuck up. I did and it didn't appear to be. When I press the ball valve down it makes a filling sound so I stopped.

Another said to run the hot water constantly which we did and the boiler came and and has since stayed on, but the central heating still not seemingly on.

All ideas apprecaited....Thanks!!!

Thank you for that. Is the valve the most likely problem? Where do I find the valve and are they expensive to replace?

Did you actually ask them to come?

It seems surprising when their job is to deal with heating problems and they apparently "cannot come" ?

Whilst the last comment does make it sound like a failed motor valve, its odd that previously hitting the boiler caused it to come on.

It makes me wonder if you might actually have two problems, one with the valve and another with the boiler.

I think the Solos are typified with a number like "60" to identify the power and when calling an engineer you should quote that number as well if there is one.

thanks for your comments, the engineers could come but not until next week but was hoping for it sorting this week as I am off work. It may be just coincidental that the boiler came on after hitting it as it intermittingly runs for the hot water. Are the valves difficult and expensive to replace?

Depending on the make it might just be possible to replace the motor.

Thats only if you are competent to work on 230v operated equipment and to use a meter to test the motor for continuity etc.

Thanks again for everyone's help. Will see how I get on. ;)
