Baxi Solo wm 40/4 rs not firing

Hi, new here so please be patient. My boiler has recently refused to fire up. I have just replaced the diverter head with synchron motor and that is working fine. The pilot light is on and there is call from the heating and boiler stat, there is power to the solenoid when the boiler stat is operated. I am suspecting the actual solenoid or maybe the gas valve itself. There is no sound (that I can hear) from the solenoid. If disconnected from power there is no continuity or resistance across any two terminals (there are three). Is there a way of testing the solenoid with a mutlimeter?

I'm not gas safe no, I just wanted to make sure I'm testing the solenoid correctly and whether this is the defective part. This doesn't disturb the gas system i.e. the actual supply plumbing as the solenoid sits around the actual valve on the outside. If it proves that it is the valve itself then I certainly won't be touching it myself. My question essentially is should there be any reading from the solenoid or does no reading mean it's dead?

How can something have no resistance AND no continuity?

As I understand it, the solenoid is a coil which, when powered, produces a magnetic field which in turn moves the valve to allow gas to enter the burner. So I'm assuming that if the coil is broken then there will be no continuity and therefore no resistance?

If you have this and 240v across L&N terminals when calling, then valve, or at least operator, is guffed.

But now I am going to get a slapping for giving gas advice.

In your defence it's more electrical advice I do get 240v when calling which is why I'm assuming the solenoid or valve. I've got a solenoid coming as it's the cheaper and easier option. If that proves fruitless then it's over to the gas safe bloke

This is really a job for a RGi man , how will you know if it's not leaking gas when you replace the solenoid ? Get a professional in and sleep easy
