So I gather at some point over the last few years standards were updated and we're meant to nail every single tile to a roof.

This seems kind of crazy to me - are people really following this? Feels like even a minor job in future could be a nightmare of broken tiles etc.

Conc's yes. Plains no.

Concise at the point! I'm using concrete, so nailing it is!

Should they need to come out at any point in future (I only ask because this is basically our forever house, not because I plan to!) is it realistically possible to do it without breaking the tiles? They seem relatively fragile

Nah, concrete interlocking tiles don't just blow off. It was a stupid change in the standards. Many interlocking tiles don't even have nail holes!

My roof has been retiled 20 years ago with concrete interlocking tiles.
Not one of them has moved an I know they've not been nailed apart from top and side rows if i well remember.

not difficult to change a nailed tile. nailed and clipped a bit more fun.
tiles not nailed not blowing off depends on exposure,
They often lifted off by vacuum forces

I kinda agree. We started doing it a number of years back as belt and braces aproach. None of the roof prior have been a problem either. I plain refuse to nail every plain though. Every fifth or sixth course.

Me old Ma has Staffy blues on her roof. As Woody said, not a nail hole in sight.

We did a telephone exchange building in Hampshire 20 years ago using Keymer Clay plain tiles.

Each tile twice nailed..

We also did a repair in 1985 after the big storms in Lymington High street
The building over 100 years old, a patch of 160 clay MM plain tiles were lifted off into the street below.

Prior to this it had never been damaged.

you never know

If every roof tile is nailed and a tile is broken , how do you renail any replacement tile.

Redland fixing specification for tiles used to be nail eaves, verges, and every 3rd course including ridge course.
If your property was in an exposed location you could nail every 2nd course.
Don't know why they changed the rules to every tile having to be nailed.

Weather is changing , rain is heavier, winds stronger more often..
Insurance claims common as is refusal to pay because of poor fixing methods.

Tbh , it doesn't take much longer to nail a few
more once you get going.

It's not impossible to replace a plain tile for example and nail it.
Next time. You have one to replace give it more thought

If you were replacing a concrete tile on a roof were the tile above the broken tile is nailed, how do you nail your replacement tile to the batten.
