Hi
I have a bedroom with carpet but I need to make it waterproof as I have a relative who is elderly and often drops food/drink onto the floor.

The floor already has hardboard on it (stapled on) - I am considering just putting vinyl down as it seems it would be the simplest option

Other option is laminate which is a bit more involved and probably more expensive.

Anyone tried laminate over a stapled hardboard floor? I would still need quite a thick one i guess to prevent staples showing through.

To make it doubly complicated I have 2 IKEA cupboards which are half assembled and I cannot take them apart now. Laminating around them would be easy but not so sure if a vinyl fitter would need a clear room. They are almost full height to ceiling so not easy to move around unless you lift them directly up (which may make the vinyl a faff to squeeze under.

I can't see laminate over a hardboard floor as a problem you will be laying the thin foam under it so staples should not be a problem, Vinyl might show the joins or staples through but laying paper felt ( https://www.tradepriced.co.uk/paper_felt_rolls.html ) or thick lining paper should minimise that.

Depending on the clearance above the cupboards, and the agility of the fitters, the vinyl may just go under, but it can still be cut around the base of them if necessary. Laminate requres an expansion gap, so you'd need to put quadrant at the base of the cupboards to cover the gap.

Did you really mean Vinyl rather than laminate. Yes you'd need a thick one, or you'd need to knock the staples down slightly.
