I need a new fuseboard. I was aiming to go for an MK but the stockists are saying a company called BG are just as good as the BG ones. Has anyone an opinion on any of the best fusebox?

Assuming that you are in the UK <?>

I would use the one recommended by the electrician who would be carrying out the works. He will be doing the PIR, installing, testing and certifying the installation. If you are in England or Walse he will be the person who notifies the local authority that the instrallation complies with building regulations.

As he is taking on all of that responsibility it would be reasonable to leave the choice to him.

In any case, for a domestic situation, there is no way that he would install a FUSEBOARD.

True Ill have a word with him. Dont get the last comment though mate??

Perchance is there a slight implication that the nomenclanture you utilised is a tad outdated?

I guess its a regional / etc thing. Certainly I don't find it odd to refer to a modern CU/ dist-board as a fuseboard, dispite its lack of actual fuses

Yup. It's hard to say Consumer Unit without sounding a pedantic git, unless in the company of fellow electrical nerds, of course. Same with lamps and bulbs.

I work on the basis of fuseboard = fuse wires.
Consumer Unit = single phase domestic/commercial et al (MCB/RCD/RCBO)
Distribution Board = three phase commercial/industrial

But each to their own.

When I speak to my customers and ask to see their consumer unit, most times I get blank looks so out comes the term 'fuseboard' and they immediately know what it is and where it is.

All part of the dumbing-down process.

Consumers have now become customers, as have patients, passengers clients etc.

I've not come across a Customer Unit — Yet!

Part 2 of the regs actually does make a distinction - CUs are a 'particular type' of DB, the essential difference being that they are type tested. That being the case, virtually all of the 'things' installed in domestic premises (and many in commercial ones) are actually Consumer Units in BS7671-speak.

Indeed. In any field in which there is technical terminology/jargon, when dealing with 'the public' one has to adopt a vocabulary that they understand. The important thing is obviously effective communication, regardless of what words need to be used to achieve that; even lawyers and doctors now generally understand that.

Kind Regards, John

The term Fusebox or Fuseboard is very widely understood by the general public, so it makes sense to use it as a generic term. Unless you are an electrician or work in the building trade, the term "consumer unit" might not be familiar to you.

I've never liked the term consumer unit anyway. Why adopt a rather vague term which doesn't really describe what the article is in place of a more precise term which does?

The same goes for residual-current device in place of residual-current circuit-breaker.
