Best HD source/provider for my new HD ready LCD TV

I just bought a Panasonic HD ready LCD TV & would like to get HD.
We're currently on Virgin Media who offer an HD box for £99 but very limited HD channels available. Looked into Sky but a bit pricey + don't want to change provider as we have PC, Phone & TV.
I've been told about a Freesat box.
Any suggestions would be great. I'm a bit of a numpty in this area so please be gentle.
