Best paint for rusty metal garage door.

It seems that there is little better than hammerite to paint over the rusty parts but it is quite expensive.

Does anyone know of a rather cheaper anti rust paint available now?

Firstly you want to wear goggles and a mask and try and get rid of as much flaking rust as possible

Then, if you have one use a fine abrader or electric grinder

Dust off the rust .....keep goggles , mask and gloves on ! .....

Then apply a rust inhibiting primer ........to the rusted areas ....and if most of the door is rusty ......the whole door !


This needs to cure and harden off .....read the tin

Then, depending on colour I would finish with 2 coats of any decent rust resisting paint ...johnstones , crown etc

They are not cheap but rust is a devil and the paints need to be strong to hold it back

It's a lot of effort but I think it's worth it ......to cut backmon time you can apply tge top coats with a roller and two and a half brush if you like



Alternatively replace the door ......but restoring it is much more fun


But remember , goggles , mask , gloves with sanding and scraping any metal paints ......they are really bad for you

Steel doors are usually galvanised, so it is preferable not to abrade away more of the zinc.

Hammerite is actually not a corrosion-resistant coating, rust can continue to grow under it and it is very difficult to remove or recoat.

Red oxide primer, followed by an ordinary oil paint system of undercoat and gloss, gives better protection. There are more modern anti-corrosion primers, but they are more expensive.

For lighter rust some furniture restorers use white vinegar applied with those green light foam washing up pads

Allow to dry , clean and degrease with meths or white spirit

Then go with rust inhibiting primer

Then topcoats to finish ?

Certainly safer than abrading too much but if the rust is on the march in the long term a new door might be the answer


Pictures would help .....in my view the cost of decent modern appropriate specialist paint .....in the form here of a rust primer ....is going to be a lot less than replacing the door
