I'm redecorating a landing which has seven doors. Once the decorating is complete I will have new carpet put down. When should the new doors be fitted? A mate tells me to get them hung AFTER the new carpet so they can be trimmed not to rub on it. But a neighbour says that when he had new doors fitted he had to virtually repaint the frames afterwards because the chippy did not fit the new hinges in the same location as the old ones. Any advice would be very much appreciated. Kind regards to all.

Most hinges will be 150mm from the top and 225mm from the bottom. You might need to make good after the doors are hung but it will be minimal.

I'd fit the dors first and then the carpet just to avoid getting wood shavings all over your new floor. If they need to be eased at the bottom then I'd mark how much to take off, take them outside and then plane them.
Only if there are no hinge cut outs on the frames or if they were in completely the wrong place would I change the position of the hinges to a standard place, which alters depending on where you live, for where I am, it's 7 inch down and 9 inch up, but a good carpenter should make good any areas that need filling before they leave the job.

you might consider using lift-off hinges. There is a small extra cost but they make it quicker to fit and trim the door, and very very very much easier to take it off and on when you fit new carpets or to repaint. They can also help when you are carrying large furniture through.
