best way to carpet open tread staircase

I want your advice on which is the best way to carpet an open tread mahogany staircase. Is it best to fix the carpet to the underside of each tread or to finish it off at the leading edge? I want to have the wood showing at the sides. Thanks to anyone who can help me!
