BG condemn and disconnect boiler - advice appreciated (Thorn Apollo 15/30B)

Hi, Would really appreciate some advice please...Boiler: Thorn Apollo 15/30B

My mother called BG in yesterday because she could see a bright orange glow above the usual blue pilot light. It looked like a thin piece of metal sticking in to the flame that was very hot and glowing orange.

BG called today and said that the seal in to the room had perished and that there was a spillage of products. They said that the part was no longer available and that she would need a new boiler. They told her that they have capped the supply at the meter.

Just wondered if this sounds correct. I am only checking because a few years ago BG told me that parts were no longer available for my boiler and a quick call to the manufacturer revealed that all parts were in fact still available - BG apologised and said they had made a mistake!

Thorn became Potterton Myson & then Baxi Potterton so you could check with them for parts availability. BG were famous for saying parts are no longer available for an appliance but it didn't necessary mean the part you needed weren't just that some parts on it were not, remember their engineers are financially rewarded for selling you a new overpriced boiler. The orange glow is most likely the thermocouple, BG were also good at adjusting the pilot light to its maximum so much so that we would jokingly say to customers "I bet BG were the last company to service your boiler as we could hear the pilot light from outside" UPDATE Thorn Apollo 15/30B casing seals £21.99 on ebay.

That sweeping statement is absolute rubbish. I Know of no cases where that happened on purpose.

Thanks for the information. I will contact Baxi spares when they open again next week. The seals appear to be available as mentioned (if this is the seal that BG is referring to). Could I also ask, is it normal for the thin wire (thermocouple?) to be glowing orange?

If the pilot light is ajusted correctly cherry red would be better, over cooking them will shorten their life expectancy.

why not raise your concern with the service company,you can ask them for the part number's of the parts they say are unavailable.If they say why,just say i think your visiting technician made a mistake .

Your man gets 15 quid before tax to put a lead through. I'd almost guarantee at full heat input the boiler will fail emissions test and be categorised at least 'at risk'.

Your man gets 15 quid before tax to put a lead through. I'd almost guarantee at full heat input the boiler will fail emissions test and be categorised at least 'at risk'.

Hi, I had assumed that it was the case seal but just checked and the engineer said that it was the seal around the glass that you look through to see the pilot light. She (the engineer) showed my mother that it was not working by putting a match by the glass. Apparently the flame on the match increased and then went out?

The round sight glass kit Part No 307A251 is listed as obsolete but there is one on ebay for £24.99 its described as new Sight glass Myson Apollo/Thorn Olympic 307A251, hope this helps.
