Hi everyone. This is my first post and I am looking for a bit of advice please.

I have read through the FAQS, and ran a search for my problem , but there is a lot of info that points to the same two things and I'm trying to decide on a way to go.

Ok here goes, sat pm I noticed a leak coming from the boiler. Established it was the auto air valve cap was cracked , replaced yesterday and all seemed fine. Was too good to be true. Then the pressure started rising steadily from 1 bar to almost 4. Switched off , bled a couple of radiators and tried again. Same thing happened. Reading here on the forum would suggest expansion vessel issue. Spoke to a guy over the phone who said it would more likely be the heat exchanger if it was rising when the heating was on. So I phoned BG to ask for call out cost and its £168 inc vat regardless of the fit.

Do you guys think its likely to be the heat exchanger? Sorry to ask none obvious questions but I phoned my husband and he says i'm daft paying that amount of money when he could have changed the expansion vessel if thats what it was!

Thanks in advance
Sorry its a BIASI Garda MS..

Why on earth do you want to believe what some person you phoned has told you? Clearly as you did not engage him is is probably not too pleased at being phoned for free advice and either knows nothing about boilers or intentionally misled you in return for you wasting his time.

The first thing to do is attempt to repressurise the EXV exactly according to the instructions given in the FAQ on this site. Any reasonably handy person can do it.

The EXV may have failed but thats not very common on your model. If it does need to be replaced that normally needs a gas registered engineer as the flue usually had to be disconnected and in some cases the boiler has to come off the wall. We would charge about £168 as well as the part costs about £75 and it can be quite a time consuming job.

Thanks for your reply Tony.

Sorry, I didn't really give much info on the guy I spoke to. I'm at work and its our cleaners's husband who is currently working down in London, so he was just trying to help when I asked. I did also ask if he could recommend a local guy. He was sure it couldn't be the expansion vessel, so I panicked and rang BG.

The problem did only arise after fitting the new air release cap so I have no idea honestly. I just didn't want to get someone else to fix this problem and cause another really.

The quality of advice depends on the person giving the advice! You ask an accountant about money but not about liver transplants!

All I can say is that what you have described is a classic symptom of an EXV which is not working. Anyone who knows anything much about boilers would know that.

I dont see any connection with you replacing the cap on the auto air vent UNLESS at the same time you went round bleeding radiators and have not owned up to it !

:p At least you made me laugh! Sorry for not elaborating , he works for WMDC as a heating engineer, and would have come round to help if he wasn't down South (I'm in Yorkshire)

No bleeding was done I promise..what started as a leak turned into high pressure. Weeks prior to that the boiler kept switching itself off but sounding like it was running even though the pilot light was out and the radiators were then cold. Thats the only relevant history I can add.

Will just book the BG guy and hope for the best.

Thanks again Tony

If your exp' vessel needs replacing ??? another one could be connected else where on the system , would work out cheaper !!!

Just an update, BG guy turned up, used a foot pump to put air into the expansion vessel and buggered off 2 mins later. Not bad for £168!
