My old mum's house has had building work done, and the garden is looking very sparse. I would like to put in something big and colourful. I do grow dahlias myself, and have put a couple of big dec plants in, which will soon grow and flower. But all my others are border plants.

I don't know what else to do. There is not much time for something to establish and bloom before the summer is over.

Any ideas? there are plenty of healthy shrubs and bushes, but it is colour we are short of.

I have tried Betulia plants in the past, but when planted out of their pots they seemed to resent the disturbance and did not establish well.

I have plenty of good garden compost.
